Putting the new in Newcastle

Newcastle United has a rich heritage dating back to 1892 when the club was founded. Since then it’s had several emblems along the way, the current one has been in place since 1988. In 2023 at a time where more clubs are simplifying their emblem for the digital age, I thought it was time for Newcastle to do the same.

I decided to focus on the word castle which has connotations of strength and stability. I took inspiration from the small rook in the current emblem. Focusing on this one aspect allows the design to remain simple and clear whilst still retaining something from the old emblem.

The rest of the identity takes inspiration from the iconic black and white stripes of the new castle strip. The black and white theme has also been extended into the photography and beyond.
